    The process of searching for appropriate employees and encouraging them to apply for jobs is known as Recruitment. The main objective of recruitment is to attract personnel with the required qualifications for the jobs. It is a positive process as it attracts people to apply for jobs. It proceeds with the selection process and creates a pool of candidates so that organisations can select the most suitable candidate. Organisations communicate the vacancy in an organisation by various sources of recruitment. It aims to serve two functions: i) To discover various sources of manpower; ii) To create a pool of applicants. Internal and External are the two sources of recruitment.

    The process of identifying and choosing the best person out of a number of prospective candidates for a job is known as Selection. Here, various steps are performed to eliminate the unsuitable candidates and to select the most suitable candidate out of the pool created by the recruitment process. Selection includes various steps, and at every step, candidates are eliminated until the right candidate is found. It is called a negative process because more candidates are eliminated than employed.

    Purpose It aims to create a pool of applicants. It aims to ensure that competent candidate is selected for a job.
    Process It is a simple process as there are not many steps or hurdles. It is a complex process as there are many steps or hurdles.
    Stage It starts before the selection process. It starts after the recruitment process.

    Recruitment and selection both are the part of organizational function. Both these functions are of great part at their specific places.

    It is said that recruitment is the process that spreads positivity in the organizational environment and on the other side selection spreads negativity.

    The reason behind the positive level of recruitment is that it includes attracting more and more candidates for the work. Recruitment creates a very healthy environment in the overall functioning of the candidates from the function.

    The negative process in Relation to selection always stands correct. This is because selection includes shortlisting the best among the large no of employees. It includes maintaining everything with proper records and selection. 

    So both these organizational functions are the lifestyle of many satisfied customers.

    Both recruitment and selection are the two phases of the employment process. The differences between the two are:

    1. Recruitment is the process of searching the candidates for employment and stimulating them to apply for jobs in the organization WHEREAS selection involves the series of steps by which the candidates are screened for choosing the most suitable persons for vacant posts.

    2. The basic purpose of recruitments is to create a talent pool of candidates to enable the selection of best candidates for the organization, by attracting more and more employees to apply in the organization WHEREAS the basic purpose of selection process is to choose the right candidate to fill the various positions in the organization.

    3. Recruitment is a positive process i.e. encouraging more and more employees to apply WHEREAS selection is a negative process as it involves rejection of the unsuitable candidates.

    4. Recruitment is concerned with tapping the sources of human resources WHEREAS selection is concerned with selecting the most suitable candidate through various interviews and tests.

    5. There is no contract of recruitment established in recruitment WHEREAS selection results in a contract of service between the employer and the selected employee.
