I'm doing some analyses on Reddit data and looked at the most discussed board games in this subreddit over one year: Image source/Full list Personally, I'm surprised that Catan still ranks that high, which is probably due to the 30+ versions/extensions and its status as an entry point into the world of board games. Also interesting that chess didn't make the cut (75 mentions). Many people aren't aware that there's been a revolution in board game design in the last 25 years. The old "classics" like Risk, Monopoly, etc, tend to have design problems like: a lack of interesting decisions (your choices are obvious or your fate is determined by random chance) player elimination (so some players will have to leave the game early and don't get to play) potentially unlimited playtime (so you can't tell
if a game will take an hour to play, or six hours) the winner being obvious long before the game ends
There are thousands of clever games out there that don't suffer from those design problems. Worldwide, 100 new tabletop games are released each week, and the market looks very different than it did just ten years ago. Easy to learn (the rulebook is only two sides of A3), but with enough depth to keep you coming back One thing that's great about it is the dynamic between players. "Concordia" means harmony in Latin, and the game is well named. In lots of games, other players' actions only hurt you, but in Concordia other players can open up opportunities and even do things that help you. The end result is a feeling that everyone is getting rich,
you're just trying to get even richer It's just a really good, uncontroversial list. I own or have ready access to half these games, and while I think some of the games listed are overrated (namely Scythe and Splendor, personally) it's very understandable why they are enjoyable and on the list. Interestingly, half the negative comments on this are "where is this other really popular game" and half are "list is just generic and adds no value". Makes the community look nitpicky when the split
implies it's somewhere in the middle. Surprised they still have Secret Hitler as their go-to Social Deduction game though.
