ĐÁNH GIÁ CHẤT LƯỢNG

• Đây không phải là một ống kính nhanh do khẩu độ mở tối đa tương đối hẹp (f3.5-f/5.6), không hẳn thích hợp cho chụp ảnh trong môi trường ánh sáng yếu, nhất là ở chế độ cầm tay chụp. • Ống có độ chắc chắn của thân ống ở mức trung bình thấp, gá lắp đuôi ống bằng nhựa làm giảm tuổi thọ của ống. • Độ sắc nét trung bình, ở tiêu cự 18mm gặp hiện tượng giảm nét ở các góc ảnh. Ở tiêu cự dài hơn, hiện tượng giảm nét mất dần và với người chơi ảnh nghiệp dư là hoàn toàn có thể chấp nhận. • Cầu sai: Độ méo ảnh (lồi) ở 18mm là rất đáng kể, tới 24mm gần như triệu tiêu và ngoài 24mm bắt đầu xuất hiện méo ảnh lõm, nặng nhất tư 35mm đến ngoài 50mm đôi chút và giảm dần tới 105mm thì không còn là vấn đề trên thực tế. • Sắc sai: Hiện tượng sắc sai xảy ra hầu như trên suốt chiều dài tiêu cự, tuy nhiên đây là hiện tượng dễ khắc phục khi chỉnh sửa bằng phần mềm nên không thực sự là vấn đề lớn. • Tuy ống này có gắn cớ chế chông rung VR của Nikon nhưng theo nhiều đánh giá, khả năng chống rung của 18-105mm VR cũng hạn chế, chỉ cho phép giảm được 1 đến 2 bước tốc độ.

ĐÁNH GIÁ CHUNG

Đây là một ống kit có công năng tương đối mạnh với với tầm zoom 18-105mm (5.83x) phù hợp với chụp ảnh du lịch, đường phố, nhưng cho chất lượng ảnh trung bình với cầu sai khá lớn, nên không thể đáp ứng được nhu cầu của người đòi hỏi chất lượng hình ảnh cao, càng không thể là một ống kính cho nhiếp ảnh gia chuyên nghiệp. Gá lắp đuối ống bằng nhựa cũng làm cho trọng lượng của ống – so với tầm tiêu cự – có phần nhẹ như đồ chơi và làm giảm giá trị của ống.

Nếu bạn mới chơi ảnh, không đòi hỏi nhiều về chất lượng hình ảnh, và còn phải suy nghĩ nhiều về ngân lượng, chưa có ý định đầu tư thêm trong tương lai gần thì đây có thể là một ống kính nên xem xét. Ngoài điểm này ra, nếu có điều kiện bạn nên quay sang xem xét các ống kính khác có chất lượng cao hơn (kể các các ống của nhà sản xuất thứ 3) để tìm kiếm một ống kính chơi ưng ý và lâu dài.

Size and Weight Comparison

The size of a lens is an important deciding factor when comparing two lenses. Nikon Z 18-140mm f3.5-6.3 VR is the longer of the two lenses at 90mm. The Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR with a length of 89mm, is 1mm shorter. On the other hand, the Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR has a larger diameter of 76mm compared to the Nikon Z 18-140mm f3.5-6.3 VR's 73mm diameter.

The weight of a lens is as important as its external dimensions, especially if you are planning to hand hold your camera and lens combination for longer periods. Nikon Z 18-140mm f3.5-6.3 VR weighs 315g, which means it is 105g (25%) lighter than the Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR which has a weight of 420g.

Lens Mounts

The Nikon Z 18-140mm f3.5-6.3 VR has the Nikon Z lens mount whereas the Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR has the Nikon F (DX) lens mount. Some of the latest released cameras that are compatible with these mounts are Nikon Z30, Nikon Z fc and Nikon Z50 for the Nikon Z Mount and Nikon D3500, Nikon D7500 and Nikon D5600 for the Nikon F (DX) Mount.

Focal Range

Nikon Z 18-140mm f3.5-6.3 VR has a focal range of 18-140mm and 7.8X zoom ratio which has an effective (full-frame 35mm equivalent) focal range of 27-210mm when used on a APS-C / DX format camera. Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR has a focal range of 18-105mm and 5.8X zoom ratio which has an effective (full-frame 35mm equivalent) focal range of 27-157.5mm when used on a APS-C / DX format camera.

When the D5200 came out and I started using it with the 18-55 kit I was stunned at how soft the images were. I thought for sure I had gotten a bad copy of the kit so I went down to the camera store and tried a different one and then I tried another and they were all equally bad. I popped on my favorite prime lens and the difference was huge- Grand Canyon huge. In the past I have not typically been a kit basher, there are those out there that say the kit lens is horrible, just buy the body and get a prime or other, better quality, lens and I often disagree with this approach, especially for people new to DSLRS. The kit lenses, while not the best lens around are certainly a great place to start: they offer some zoom, they are usually lightweight and don’t add much to the cost of the camera. BUT with these newer sensors, especially the very sharp sensors in the D5200 D5300, and D7100 the older kit lenses like the 18-55 just can’t perform well enough.After my experience I advised anyone buying the D5200 to skip the 18-55 and get the 18-105 or consider some alternatives(Recommended Lenses for Nikon DX Cameras). The 18-105 is a better lens, it out performs the 18-55 easily but especially now that Nikon has dropped their AA filter, a filter that actually blurs the image slightly to avoid moire, in the D7100 and now the D5300 - they really needed a good lens to include with these cameras. Is the 18-140 that lens? Before we answer that I thnk it is very telling that they don’t even bother to bundle the 18-55 with the D5300 now. It is 18-140 or nothing. That makes the entry level price a good bit higher(even with B&H discounted price) and I don’t think Nikon wanted to do that- they just didn’t have any other options at this time.So how does it compare to the 18-105?
