Quite a bit là gì

1. Hai nghĩa

Quite có hai nghĩa. 
Hãy so sánh:
It's quite good, but it could be better. (= It’s OK, not bad.)  (Khá tốt nhưng có thể tốt hơn.) (= Cũng được, không tệ.)

It’s quite impossible. (= It’s completely impossible.)

(Không thể nào.) (= Hoàn toàn không thể.)

Good là một tính từ 'phân cấp': sự vật có thể tốt hơn hay kém hơn. Với những từ phân cấp, quite luôn có nghĩa giống như 'khá là' trong câu khẳng định. Impossible không phải là tính từ phân cấp. Với những từ không phân cấp, quite có nghĩa là 'hoàn toàn'.
Hãy so sánh:
- I'm quite tired, but I can walk a bit further. (Tớ khá mệt nhưng tớ có thể đi bộ một chút nữa.)

I’m quite exhausted - I couldn't walk another step.

(Tớ hoàn toàn kiệt sức - tớ không thể đi thêm một bước nào nữa.)

- It’s quite surprising, (tương tự fairly surprising)

(Khá là bất ngờ.) 

It's quite amazing. (= absolutely amazing)

(Hoàn toàn tuyệt vời.)

- He speaks French quite well, but he’s got a strong English accent. 

(Anh ấy nói tiếng Pháp khá tốt nhưng anh ấy lại có một giọng tiếng Anh rất nặng.)

He speaks French quite perfectly.

(Anh ấy nói tiếng Pháp một cách hoàn hảo.)

- I quite like her, but she’s not one of my closest friends.

(Tớ khá thích cô ấy nhưng cô ấy không phải là một trong những người bạn thân của tớ.)

Have you quite finished? (= Have you completely finished?)

(Cậu đã xong cả chưa?) (= Cậu đã xong hoàn toàn chưa?)

2. Thứ tự từ với danh từ

Quite có thể được dùng với a/an + noun. Nó thường đứng trước a/an nếu có một tính từ phân cấp hoặc không có tính từ. Ví dụ:

It’s quite a nice day. (Đó là một ngày khá đẹp.)

We watched quite an interesting film last night. (Tối qua chúng tôi đã xem một bộ phim khá thú vị.)

The party was quite a success.

(Bữa tiệc khá thành công.)

Với những tính từ không phân cấp, quite thường đứng sau a/an trong Anh-Anh. Ví dụ:

It was a quite perfect day. (Đó là một ngày hoàn hảo.)

ANH-MỸ: It was quite a perfect day.

Quite đôi khi được dùng trước the với nghĩa 'chính xác', 'hoàn toàn'. Ví dụ:

He's going quite the wrong way. (Anh ta hoàn toàn đi sai đường.)

quite the opposite. (hoàn toàn đối diện.)

3. So sánh

Quite không đứng trực tiếp trước hình thức so sánh hơn. Ví dụ:

She's rather/much/a bit older than me.

KHÔNG DÙNG: She's quite older...

Nhưng chúng ta dùng quite better với nghĩa 'hoàn toàn hồi phục' (sau khi bị bệnh).

Quite similar có nghĩa 'khá giống'; quite different có nghĩa 'hoàn toàn khác'.

4. quite a bit/few/lot

Quite a bit và quite a few (thân mật) có nghĩa gần giống như quite a lot.  Ví dụ:

We’re having quite a bit of trouble with the kids just now.

(Chúng ta vừa có chút rắc rối với bọn trẻ.)

We thought nobody would be there, but actually quite a few people came.

(Chúng tôi nghĩ sẽ không ai ở đây cả nhưng thực chất có khá nhiều người đến.)

5. Not quite

Not quite có nghĩa 'không hoàn toàn' hay 'không chính xác'. Nó có thể đứng trước tính từ, trạng từ, động từ và danh từ bao gồm cả danh từ với the. Ví dụ:

I'm not quite ready - won't be a minute.

(Tôi vẫn chưa sẵn sàng - không thể ngay lập tức được.)

She didn't run quite fast enough for a record.

(Cô ấy chạy không hoàn toàn đủ nhanh để đạt kỷ lục.)

I don’t quite agree. 

(Tớ không hoàn toàn đồng ý.)

That's not quite the colour I wanted.

(Đó chính xác không phải màu tôi muốn.)
