get something out of your system
giải tỏa (cảm xúc tiêu cực); làm một việc để thoả mong muốn (và để hết thèm/hết bận tâm về việc đó)
something là một việc nhất định, tuỳ vào tình huống cụ thể
get it out of your system là cách nói thường gặp của thành ngữ này, với it là một việc đã được nói đến hay được ngụ ý.
từ system nhiều người chúng ta quen dùng với nghĩa là hệ thống. Nhưng ở đây, system có nghĩa đen là bộ máy tâm sinh lý (của một người), hay theo nghĩa rộng hơn là cơ thể.
get something out of your system hiểu theo nghĩa đen là lấy một thứ ra khỏi cơ thể; hiểu theo nghĩa bóng là lấy một thứ ra khỏi đầu, ra khỏi suy nghĩ, không bận tâm đến nó nữa.
Cụ thể, cụm từ này có hai nghĩa ẩn dụ:
Thứ nhất, get something out of your system là làm một việc - thường là việc bạn muốn làm từ lâu - để có thể bỏ nó ra khỏi đầu, không bận tâm nữa, hoặc để không còn mong muốn, thèm khát làm việc đó nữa, vì khi chưa làm hoặc làm chưa đã, chưa thì bạn còn nghĩ ngợi, để tâm đến nó. Với nghĩa này, khi dịch, tuỳ vào tình huống và văn phong, chúng ta có thể lựa chọn từ ngữ cho phù hợp.
Ví dụ:
I'm on a diet but look at these amazing cupcakes! So tempting! Should I have one to get it out of my system?
Mình đang ăn kiêng đấy nhưng nhìn mấy cái bánh cupcake tuyệt vời này xem! Hấp dẫn quá đi! Mình có nên làm một cái để dứt cơn thèm không nhỉ?
tempting: hấp dẫn, cám dỗ, lôi cuốn, mời gọi
Ví dụ khác:
If you think it's a good idea, don't just sit here and talk. You need to do something about it and get it out of your system.
Nếu cậu thấy đó là ý tưởng hay, đừng chỉ ngồi đây nói. Cậu cần làm điều gì đó và giải phóng ý tưởng.
Thứ hai, get something out of your system có nghĩa là trút bỏ, giải tỏa một cảm xúc mạnh mẽ, thường là cảm xúc tiêu cực, như giải tỏa bức xúc, giải tỏa căng thẳng v.v.
Ví dụ:
