FORD RANGER HYBRID EXPECTED BY 2024, SAYS REPORT
The New Ranger Was Built With Electrification In Mind
by Zac M. November 30, 2021, 8:30 am

Mandated emission targets are certainly a dampener on the olden days when the only genuine concern was gas mileage, and it didn’t matter if you owned a diesel or petrol car. However, with today’s political climate, the future is looking electric, and with legislation putting mandates for hybrid or electric vehicles, it’s no longer a question of whether a car will feature battery power or not; but it’s simply a matter of when. For the next-generation Ford Ranger, it looks like a hybrid-powered trim is expected to arrive by 2024.

The Next-Generation Ford Ranger Was Designed To Adapt To Different Powertrains
According to Australia’s Drive, briefings with engineers that led up to the unveiling of the 2023 Ford Ranger offered some hints about electrification and the chassis design and its ability to adapt to what needs may arise over the duration of the new generation Ranger. One engineer for the new Ford Ranger stated that ability to apply electrification in the platform is “enabled,” but wouldn’t elaborate beyond that.

The global chief engineer for the new P703 Ford Ranger, Ian Foston, stated “Certainly we’ve spoken to customers all around the world, and there’s clearly two big drivers for electrification (and hybrid technology). One is through customers who’ve often had ownership experiences in electric vehicles of some variety. And they’re asking about when will pickups be available with that technology. And there’s also legislative requirements that have been applied in a number of markets around the world. So clearly there’s a big future for (hybrid and electric vehicles) in every segment, trucks being one of them as well.”

The Ford Ranger hybrid may potentially have the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine paired with the hybrid powertrain, but the only way to be sure is by waiting until the Ranger hybrid is released.

What It Means For North American Customers
The timeline is one of intrigue for American and Canadian customers, who will get the P703N Ford Ranger in 2023 as a 2024 model. The truck will roll off the Michigan Assembly Plant alongside the Ford Bronco in due time, and hybridization has long been rumored for both the Bronco and the Ranger. Seeing as they share a similar architecture, a likely scenario would be that the Ford Ranger launches in North America with a hybrid powertrain, similar to that of the Ford Maverick, while the Bronco gets an electrified powertrain refresh to compliment the new truck.

Interesting. I would like a Powerboost version with the 2.7 but that isn’t gonna happen lol
I’d settle for a 2.3 Powerboost but i would like even more a 2.3 ecoboost plug in Powerboost.
However, if the Bronco came out with an electrified version (since rumors say 2024 we’ll see a mild midcycle me refresh). If they did a Powerboost bronco that had less off road worthy suspension for those of us who live in Wisconsin… in theory the added weight of batteries would require a different suspension and perhaps better towing???

let the conspiracy theories start!

I'd love to see a full EV similar to the Lightning. I'm guessing Ford doesn't want to take sales away from the Lightning so I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon. I hope they don't use the same powertrain as the Maverick, if they do there's less incentive to buy a Ranger unless you need the tow capacity or hauling heavier loads.

The refresh for the Bronco will be right about the time mine is supposed to be delivered in 2024. ?

Hahaha
If they launch a simultaneously hybrid Bronco & Ranger… I actually may order the Bronco instead. I use the bed of my F150 quite a bit but I really love the looks of that Bronco.

I hate to disagree with you, especially now that you've been promoted at 5g , but I've never really followed the thought that offering certain options on a smaller vehicle steals sales from the larger one. In the car and SUV market they're electrifying all sizes, not just full-size. Why would trucks be any different.
Sure, there will be some people that may buy a Ranger over a full-size, but that market is really insignificant and would be greatly offset by the number of customers they would keep, as well as the new customers they would gain.
If Ford doesn't electrify the Ranger, they'll lose sales to other makers that do. I'll be buying a new truck in a couple years and if no one has a midsize EV or PHEV, I won't move up to the Lightning, because I don't want a truck that big. I'll get a Rivan instead.

It's interesting, a lot of speculative talk has been coming out of local publications without much to back it up. I was at the same launch event they were, and Ian (the engineer) was very careful with his words. To me what he was saying was that the vehicle would go pure electric. I honestly believe that in some markets there won't be a hybrid, rather a lightning option. Especially in Europe.

The Maverick has the same hybrid powertrain as the Escape (i.e. a 2.5 Atkinson cycle engine paired with an eCVT). That hybrid powertain is designed for light duty service (2000 pound tow limit in the Maverick). It is not capable of the performance, durability, and load/towing ability that customers would expect/demand in a Ranger. I think there is zero chance of this hybrid powertrain being deployed in a Ranger.

I don’t thin the report was implying the ranger gets the same set up as a Maverick, but rather the mechanical setup would be similar.

The mechanical setup would not be similar in my opinion. Ford has two hybrid architectures. One is the eCVT setup as in the Escape and Maverick. It is intended for light duty and would not get the job done in a Ranger. The second hybrid architecture is the hybrid system incorporated into the 10 speed automatic (like the F-150 Powerboost or the Hybrid Explorer) which is designed for heavier "truck like" duty and can it handle substantial towing. If we see a hybrid system in a Ranger it would be the second architecture. Of course, this is all speculation on my part.

Maybe we’re splitting hairs over semantics. I was implying just a hybrid variant. Mechanically similar i meant no plug in hybrid or full EV. I agreed, i don’t think they are going to put a different tranny or have a very low powered Ranger. It will probably be more like a Powerboost similar to the F150 setup.

lol I'm all for a good discussion. ?

I'm just guessing here but my theory is Ford wants to push out as many Lightning's as the can as it's a huge money maker for them. The F150 being their bread and butter by offering both the Ranger and the Lightning right away it does take larger profit away from them. By offering a hybrid or a PHEV at first in the Ranger they wouldn't lose much if any sales to competitors unless one offered something really great. There's a lot of dedicated Ford guys out there so I think most would stick with the Ranger as a hybrid. Then I think a mid Gen refresh brings us a full EV Ranger.

True there are those like myself who have no need for a full size truck anymore but if I really wanted a full EV I would seriously consider the base Lightning, you cant beat the price point. I wasn't impressed at all with the Colorado ZR2 or the Tacoma so they'd both need a major overhaul (especially the outdated interiors and the horrible seating position) and I've heard the same from others but maybe I'm wrong. ?‍

As for the F-150 vs Ranger debate, I currently own a 2018 F-150 but had smaller Ford trucks ('83, '94 & '02 Rangers & '07 Sport Trac) prior to that. I wasn't impressed with what I saw as a half-arsed effort by Ford on the current Ranger.

However, if they do bring to the North American market a next gen Ranger Hybrid with a setup similar to the F-150 PowerBoost that would be perfect.

I honestly don't see that happening though. Ford has always held the Ranger back here as far as technology goes and I believe that is done to protect F-150 sales.

I would not be the least bit surprised if some of the features already shown on the ROW next gen Ranger don't even make it to the North American market. In most of those markets the F-series is not available which means the Ranger is Ford's only truck and to be competitive in those markets it has to offer similar or better features than its competition.

Not so much here. It's been a long time since Ford has shown any real commitment to the Ranger in this market and I honestly don't see that changing anytime soon. Case in point: Why do we have to wait a year longer than everyone else to get the new model? One could argue that Ford would much rather use their production capacity at MAP to build Broncos, not lower profit Rangers that might also steal a few F-150 sales.

Is Ford Ranger coming out with a hybrid?

As Ford Authority reported back in 2020 and again last year, a plug-in Ford Ranger hybrid model has long been expected to join the mid-size pickup's lineup at some point in the near future, though a precise timeline has proven elusive.

Will there be an all

Ford continues its investment in electrified vehicles with the upcoming Ranger Lightning fully electric compact pickup truck. Sept. 12, 2022, at 3:23 p.m.

What can I expect from a 2023 Ford Ranger?

What Engine Will the 2023 Ranger Have? We expect the Ranger's 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 and 10-speed automatic transmission to carry over. The powertrain may get slight increases in output over its current 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, and shift performance or ratios in the 10-speed auto could be updated.

Is the Ford Ranger changing in 2023?

Ford's mid-size Ranger pickup truck will be redesigned for the 2023 model year. It adopts bolder front-end styling inspired by the larger F-150.
