Biography

The Hachijo blood Kazuya inherited, allowed for Devil to possess him when he was young.[2] Devil became an active agent within Kazuya after he was thrown off a cliff when he was five-years-old by Heihachi Mishima, and nearly died. Devil was later a key factor allowing Kazuya to defeat his father at the first King of Iron Fist Tournament,[3] although apparently in a way that enabled Kazuya to keep Devil relatively secret.

Devil's supremacy within Kazuya was challenged by the mysterious entity, Angel, who appeared within Kazuya's soul in connection with the confusion brought about by meeting Jun Kazama. Despite likely taking on his devil form once again to fight Heihachi in the final round of the second Iron Fist Tournament, the confusion within Kazuya led to his loss in the battle against his father. He was then thrown into a volcano. Consequently, Devil's essence was torn apart by this. One-half of it remained with Kazuya, allowing him to partially survive the volcano, or at least preserve some of his body, and the other half fled to Kazuya's unborn son (the only remaining bearer of Hachijo blood). Devil was fought off by Jun Kazama, who continued to protect her son, until her apparent death at the hands of Ogre, fifteen years later. Devil was finally able to enter Jin, and in the process, branded his upper arm. Devil in this iteration is hereafter known as Devil Jin, and possesses a personality distinct from both Jin's as well as Devil Kazuya's.

Meanwhile, Kazuya's half of Devil lingered within his remains as they were rebuilt by G Corporation. When Kazuya attended the fourth Iron Fist Tournament, he was defeated by Heihachi once more, and taken to meet his son for the first time. Upon seeing its other half within Jin, Devil abruptly took control over Kazuya's body without transforming, and spoke to Heihachi through its host. Devil then attempted to forcefully extract its other half from Jin, only for it to be rejected due to Jin's Kazama blood. Kazuya fought back against Devil and managed to prevail, learning from the way it had possessed him without transforming in order to do the same to Devil. Thereafter, Kazuya has merged with Devil, and now transforms at will, borrowing from Devil's abilities whilst in various stages of transformation as well as being able to fully transform.

In the final Tekken 7 battle with Heihachi, Kazuya demonstrates the ability to transform into a much more powerful version of Devil than has been seen before.

Personality

Originally, Devil appears as an entity with its own intentions and desires. It is unclear how much, if any, control Kazuya had over it. Devil is a power-hungry, unforgiving entity who is motivated by power above all else, and enjoys causing pain to other people, suggesting a sadistic nature.

It, to a certain extent, takes on the desires of its host, or uses these desires to fuel its own purposes. It seems to revel in the vengeful desire of its human-half, Kazuya, such as towards Heihachi. It displays no remorse for the damage that it causes to others in its quest for absolute power and control. It is also extremely arrogant, and believes that its power is unmatchable. It scorns attempts made to understand it through scientific means,[4] and demonstrates a cunning and ruthlessness in battle. It also appears to be manipulative, becoming active when its host is at their most vulnerable and required to assent to Devil if they wish to live. Its manipulation also extends to taking advantage of their hatred so that they are more susceptible to its persuasion, such as when it tempted Jin in Tekken 4.

Appearance

Devil's appearance changes throughout the games. As Devil Kazuya, it shares its human-counterpart's facial features and hair. It has long swept back ivory horns, red eyes, including a red eye in the middle of his forehead, bat-like wings, and purple skin. It usually also has Kazuya's scar across its chest. Its depiction in the games gradually becomes more beast-like and demonic, until in Tekken 7, it is revealed to have multiple eyes across its wingspan and on its chest, with armored protrusions coming out of its body.

On Kazuya's shoulders rests the fate from a distant past.

Its history has been built many times over, again and again with each reincarnation. Unbeknownst to Kazuya, something with mysterious intentions watches over him.

Devil's appearance may be the embodiment of the mysterious intentions watching over Kazuya's fate.[5][6]

Summary of In-Game Events
After being thrown into a mountain ravine by his father, Heihachi Mishima, Kazuya Mishima was approached by an entity of frightening power known as Devil. The entity offered Kazuya the power to overthrow his father in exchange for his soul. Kazuya, driven by anger and revenge, accepted the Devil's offer. The power of the Devil allowed Kazuya to finally defeat Heihachi in the final round of the first King of Iron Fist Tournament. Since Kazuya met Jun Kazama, another entity was created within Kazuya known as Angel which represented all that was good within him.

Regardless of Kazuya's internal struggles he still announced the second King of Iron Fist Tournament. During the final round, a vengeful Heihachi easily beats Kazuya forcing the Devil to take over Kazuya's body, transforming him into his Hybrid form Devil Kazuya. Despite his advantages, Devil Kazuya is defeated by Heihachi and a part of his spirit flees Kazuya's unconscious body. Heihachi then threw Kazuya's lifeless body into the mouth of a volcano, leaving Kazuya's half of the Devil to be destroyed alongside his son.

In Kazuya's and Devil's Tekken 2 ending, the Devil leaves Kazuya's body and becomes his own form.

Tekken 3

Summary of In-Game Events
The part of Devil that fled attempted to inhabit the body of Kazuya's and Jun's unborn child Jin Kazama. Jun fought this part of Devil off but it succeeded fifteen years later after her apparent demise. It then branded the now teenage Jin with a mark on his left arm, possessing him. Although it had a presence within Jin, Devil was not yet active in him.

After winning the third King of Iron Fist Tournament, Jin was shot in the head by Heihachi. The fatal injury activated Jin's Devil Gene, and Devil manifested, causing Jin to awaken as Devil Jin. Devil Jin made quick work of Heihachi and the guards that accompanied him. Jin has been able to use the power of Devil to transform into Devil Jin ever since, although he seems to have limited power and control over his devil form.

Tekken 4

Summary of In-Game Events
A few days after Kazuya was thrown into a volcano by Heihachi, his body was retrieved by G-Corporation, a biotech firm. They managed to bring Kazuya back to life, which re-awoke the leftover part of Devil that existed inside his body. With G-Corporation's help, Kazuya began investigating the biomechanics of the Devil Gene within him by subjecting himself to various experiments. Kazuya believed that he would be able to control and unlock the power of the Devil Gene, and thus control the power of Devil.

Twenty years later during the events of the fourth King of Iron Fist Tournament, Kazuya was supposed to meet his son, Jin Kazama, in the seventh round of the tournament. Kazuya was declared the winner by default by tournament officials, however, and he sensed that Heihachi had some involvement in Jin's disappearance. Heihachi's plans were to lure both Jin and Kazuya to the tournament to obtain the Devil Gene for himself and use it in his experiments. Combined with the blood of Ogre, Heihachi hoped to achieve immortality. Proceeding to the final round of the tournament, Kazuya met with Heihachi and fought him in battle once again and lost to him.

Heihachi led Kazuya to Hon-Maru, a temple deep within the Mishima compound where Jin was being held captive. Inside Hon-Maru and upon seeing the subdued Jin, Kazuya's eyes began to glow red as Devil took control of his body. Devil confirms its theory that the other half of itself was inside Jin, much to the surprise of Heihachi, who demanded to know who he was speaking with. Devil revealed that after Heihachi almost killed Kazuya twenty years ago, its being separated and that it was here to retrieve its other half.

Thanking Heihachi in the process for making the search easier, Devil then proceeded to knock Heihachi out of the room with its telekinetic powers. Devil attempted to absorb the rest of its being, subconsciously taunting Jin, telling Jin to curse it and hate it. The chains that bound Jin act as a Devil Gene suppressant, and it is possibly these that prevented Devil from absorbing its other half. Devil presumes that the Kazama blood within Jin is the reason it can't absorb its other half. Before it can do anything else, Devil is shocked to find that Kazuya is fighting back against its control. Kazuya wins the struggle, turning Devil's possession of his body around to unify their power with him now in charge. Kazuya states that Devil has now become a part of him and that he has complete control over the entity's power. With Kazuya and Devil now acting as one being, Kazuya challenged the now conscious Jin, who was both confused and angry after being tormented by Devil. Jin defeated Kazuya, and went on to defeat his grandfather, before sparing him and flying away.

Tekken 5

Summary of In-Game Events
Following the battle of Hon-Maru, Jin had fled and Kazuya woke up alongside Heihachi. Suddenly, a squad of Jack-4's sent by G-Corporation ambushed Hon-Maru. The robots tried to take out both the weary Kazuya and Heihachi. The two fought off the attackers together, but eventually, Kazuya took an opportunity to flee and threw his father to their enemies. As Hon-Maru exploded from the self-destructing Jack-4s, Kazuya transformed into his Devil form and flew away.

Tekken 6

Summary of In-Game Events
Since completely unifying his power with his Devil-half, Kazuya seems to have become even more consumed by his evil half, taking over G-Corporation after killing the traitors and attempting to take over the world, though he disguises this under the heroic pretenses of saving the world from Jin's world war. Devil has some connection to Azazel, the demon who is awakened as Devil's two halves in Jin and Kazuya clash. Due to Jin's Devil Gene, he can hear Azazel in his mind, and it is stated by Jin that only a Devil Gene user can defeat Azazel. Azazel is apparently the origin of the Devil Gene, though defeating it did not remove the gene as Jin had hoped.

Tekken 7

Summary of In-Game Events
It is revealed that Kazuya was born with the Devil Gene inside of him, inherited from his mother, Kazumi, who also had the Devil Gene and was sent to kill Heihachi. When Kazuya was thrown off the cliff, the Devil inside him awoke, and the boy's subsequent survival confirmed for Heihachi that Kazuya had inherited the Hachijo bloodline.

Akuma was indebted to Kazumi and had promised to her to kill Heihachi and Kazuya. When he arrived at G-Corporation's Millennium Tower to kill Kazuya, Kazuya dismissed all of his soldiers from the tower, stating that Akuma’s power was too much for them. Akuma and Kazuya then engaged in battle. During the battle, Kazuya transformed into his devil form but this had been anticipated by Heihachi, and was captured by the Mishima Zaibatsu on camera and broadcasted live to the world. Heihachi then had an orbital satellite fire on G-Corporation's Millennium Tower, destroying it. Devil Kazuya survived the attack however. Later, Kazuya fired his devil laser at the satellite, destroying it, and its subsequent fall from orbit caused public unrest and opinion to turn against the Mishima Zaibatsu.

In Heihachi and Kazuya's final battle at a volcano, Kazuya unleashed the power of his devil form and ultimately transformed into a more powerful devil than ever before and was able to subdue Heihachi. However, Heihachi regained consciousness and was able to beat Kazuya out of his devil form. Kazuya finally killed Heihachi in his human form, with a punch to the heart. He then dropped Heihachi off a cliff into the lava. Kazuya's true intentions for the world seem to finally be revealed however, as he and G Corporation have not stopped the war, despite Heihachi's death and their apparent victory over the Mishima Zaibatsu. As a result, Kazuya, under the influence of the Devil Gene, is now believed by Lars Alexandersson and those with him, to be the most feared and evil person in the world.

After killing Heihachi, Kazuya was attacked by Akuma who survived the Millennium Tower's destruction. Kazuya transformed into his devil form and fought Akuma. Akuma fired a Messatsu Gohado and Devil Kazuya fired a Devil Blaster, destroying the volcano's surroundings and causing a massive explosion. The result of the fight is unknown.

Devil appeared in Tekken Tag Tournament as a playable character. It is also the last time Devil appears as a standalone character.

Ending Description:
Devil walks by and sees a downed Jun Kazama, before flying away and taking her in his arms.

Devil Kazuya appeared as an NPC boss. Devil is sought out by Jin and ends up fighting against heroes such as King, as well Ryu and Ken Masters from Capcom's Street Fighter series.

Devil attempts to obtain the Soul Edge sword from the Soul series (also produced by Namco). Devil is attacked by Shadaloo because M. Bison was interested in the Devil Gene. Jin, Heihachi, and Ryu manage to spoil Devil's plans by defeating it and returning it to its normal state.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2

Devil Kazuya made a return in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as a playable transformation stance for Kazuya, a mechanic that is utilized from this game onward.

Devil appears as part of Kazuya when he uses Devil's attacks, such as Heaven's Door and Devil Fist, as well as transforming into Devil for his Final Smash.

Fist of the North Star LEGENDS ReVIVE

Devil Kazuya makes an appearances in the mobile game Fist of the North Star X Tekken 7 crossover, where it is featured as part of Kazuya's moveset. Kazuya was one of four featured characters in along with Heihachi Mishima, Ling Xiaoyu, and King.

Gameplay

Devil Kazuya maintains Kazuya's fighting style and moves and has an ability to shoot laser beams towards its opponent even in mid-air. Since Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Kazuya is able to morph this form but in Tekken 7, he will morph this form by sacrificing his Rage, briefly transforming into Devil during Kazuya's Rage Art, or when a version of Kazuya's Rage Drive connects. Transforming into Devil will replace some of Kazuya's attacks with Devil's and can also gives access to Devil's old attacks such as Devil Twister.

In Tekken 7, the boss version of Devil Kazuya is a buffed up version of the normal Devil Kazuya. Some notable changes include Spinning Demon being extended, and the sweeps no longer having any block stun, and the return of "forgotten" moves such as Soul Annihilator.

Boss Devil Kazuya's rage art is also altered into a devastating straight punch to the gut and knocks its opponent with Devil's Wrath in mid-air as it flies and hits its airborne opponent with two downward punches to the ground, before blasting its opponent with a far more powerful Devil's Beam from its forehead, chest, and devil wings. This Rage Art is an instant death when Kazuya is fought as a boss in the Mishima Saga and during Treasure Battle.

Character Relationships

Kazuya Mishima

Devil activated in Kazuya after Kazuya was thrown from a cliff when he was five. At first, Devil, Angel, and Kazuya were separate entities who changed Kazuya's appearance. After the end of Tekken 4, Kazuya and his Devil merge to become one single entity. Tekken 7 confirms that Devil can exist within Kazuya due to him inheriting his mother, Kazumi's, devil blood.

Devil Jin

Devil's other half, that resides within Jin Kazama. In this form Devil is much more savage, beast-like, sadistic, and even claims to devour human flesh.

Jin Kazama

Devil attempted to possess him before he was born. The second half of Devil possessed him later in life, resulting in the tattoo on Jin's arm. With the Kazama's purification ability, Jin has not merged with Devil, and instead has an opposing personality to Devil Jin, although Devil appears to have increasing influence over Jin's actions.

Angel

Angel's existence is mysteriously tied to Devil's in some capacity. Formerly thought to be a possible good side of Kazuya's soul as witnessed by Jun. Angel seems to have been forcefully expelled from Kazuya's body after Devil merged with Kazuya.

Jun Kazama

Jun's presence and influence seems to have instigated a confusion within Kazuya that allowed Angel to appear. Jun wishes to save Kazuya and can sense Devil within him in Tekken 2. In the non-canon Tekken Tag Tournament, Devil comes across Jun unconscious on the ground and carefully lifts her into his arms before flying away, implying Kazuya has some degree of care for Jun and some influence over Devil's actions.

Ogre / True Ogre

Devil's rival in Tekken Tag Tournament (non-canon). There are indications that Devil and Ogre are linked, such as Heihachi believing he needs the Devil Gene to merge Ogre's blood with his own, and Julia Chang claiming that Azazel and its temple remind her of Ogre in Tekken 6. In the possibly non-canon Devil Within (Mode), Ogre's presence causes Jin to lose control of his Devil Gene.

Trivia

General:

• Details concerning the relationship of Devil to Kazuya have changed over the games, with the early games focussing on the spiritual corruption that Devil instigates in Kazuya, and later games emphasizing the genetic connection between Hachijos and the Devil Gene.
  • Inspired by the (non-canon) Tekken: The Motion Picture and other sources, it was originally believed that five-year-old Kazuya made a deal with Devil in order to survive. It is possible that devil users must still assent to Devil's presence, hence why is 'activates' when the host has suffered a fatal or near-fatal injury.
• Tekken 2 demonstrated that Devil did not have full power over Kazuya at this time. Angel's profile states that it represents Kazuya's good side. Whilst, Kazuya's non-canon Tekken 2 ending depicts him battling against Devil.
• During the ending of Tekken 4, Devil and Kazuya merge, and thereafter begin to act as one. After Devil battles internally with Kazuya for power, Kazuya emerges victorious and claims to have united their power and now to be in control of Devil.
  • After this unification, Kazuya in subsequent games has been able to control when he transforms, including only partially transforming into his devil form.
• Devil's only profile as a separate character refers to it as 'it', and all mentions of its body are "adaptable" with its blood type being "not applicable" and its age "infinite". This suggests that Devil itself is a spiritual/non-physical being, that takes on some physical attributes of whoever it possesses.
• Devil has not officially been a playable character since Tekken Tag Tournament, but made two brief cameos in Tekken 4 and Tekken 5, and some of its body parts have been customization items on Kazuya, such as the Devil horns, Devil wings, etc.
  • Devil is playable as Kazuya's transformed other half in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Tekken 7.
  • Devil also returns as a non-playable boss with distinct appearance and moves in Tekken 7.
• It is possible that Devil is the only 'devil' entity that exists, as it only becomes active in Kazuya after the death of Kazuya's mother, who also had a devil counterpart.
• Devil appears in Kazuya's and Angel's Tekken Tag Tournament 2 endings in its Tekken: Blood Vengeance form.

Tekken:

• To unlock Devil, the player must beat the Galaga game while the main game is loading and get a perfect score on all 8 stages.
• Counts as a third costume of Kazuya (his name is still shown under his health bar instead of Devil's).

Tekken 2:

• Devil is the final boss for every character in Tekken 2 except for itself. If the player uses Devil then its final boss will be Angel.
• When Devil blocks an attack, it will move its wings forward in order to guard.
• In order to unlock Devil, the game must be beaten with Kazuya.
• Devil's sub-bosses are Jun Kazama and Heihachi Mishima.
• Has the same fighting stance as Kazuya and Baek Doo San.

Tekken 3:

• Devil is not a playable character but is seen in an ephemeral form in the Tekken 3 alternate introduction video.

Tekken Tag Tournament:

• To unlock Devil, beat the game with eleven different characters.
• Devil now has its own player 2 costume while Angel counts as one of its alternate costumes.
• Devil's Inferno is purple in this game. Unlike the Tekken 2's Inferno, which was yellow.
• Devil is one of the few characters that Mokujin/Tetsujin or Unknown cannot acquire moves of.
• Choosing both Kazuya and Devil in Tekken Tag Tournament, and then tagging either character into the match, results in the morphing of one into the other (tagging in Devil while playing as Kazuya results in Kazuya morphing into Devil, and vice versa). Before the fight, whoever was chosen first will enter the match alone. The downside to this is that Kazuya cannot morph into Devil while he is down, and vice versa
  • There is a way, however, to perform a normal tag between the two, and this requires Devil to land a Devil Twister, forward dash under the opponent, but input the tag button just before you run past the opponent.
• Using Devil's Inferno on Prototype Jack, Jack-2, or Gun Jack will cause them to go berserk and run towards Devil or Angel while flailing its arms and screaming (Jack's K.O shout). If Jack hits its opponent whilst in this state, it causes a lot of damage.
• Devil's sub boss is Jin Kazama. If Jin is not available then it is Kazuya. If neither are available then it is Heihachi.

Tekken 4:

• Devil is not playable, but appears in Kazuya's prologue and epilogue. In Kazuya's ending, after consuming Jin's Devil Gene, Kazuya turns into his original complete devil form whilst laughing maniacally.
• An image of Devil can be seen in Julia Chang's epilogue whilst Doctor Abel is explaining how he is using the Reforestation Program, GENOCELL, for his Devil-Human Integration Program.

Tekken 5:

• Devil is not playable, but appears in Kazuya's prologue, allowing Kazuya to escape the exploding Hon-Maru.
• Kazuya can be customized to resemble Devil by equipping the following items: Devil's Horns, Third Eye, Devil Wings and Devil Tail on his 2P costume.

Tekken 6:

• Similar body parts of Devil are customization items of Devil Jin.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2:

• Devil is now a transformed state for Kazuya as part of his moveset.
• In the demo version of the game, Kazuya starts off in his Blood Vengeance devil form instead of human form.
• Katsuhiro Harada confirmed that the reason why Devil Kazuya is Kazuya's transformation rather than a separate character is because the two have become one in the aftermath of Tekken 4.[7]
• Devil's voice is only audible in the demo version, as it seems that Bandai Namco forgot to add the voice files for Kazuya while in Devil Form in the console version and the later Tekken game releases, except cutscenes, and Devil Kazuya's Super Smash Bros. appearances.

Tekken 7:

• Kazuya briefly transforms into Devil (similar to his Tekken Tag Tournament 2 appearance) for his Rage Art.
• If Kazuya's Rage Drive connects and the player is also holding u/f, then Kazuya will transform into Devil, performing Heaven's Door, and will remain as Devil for the rest of the round, with the same extra moves as in previous games with the addition of a move that is taken from Jinpachi in TTT2 done by f+1+2. However, unlike in TTT2, Kazuya will not remain as Devil between rounds.
  • Kazuya may also transform into Devil by sacrificing his Rage to transform directly, rather than using his Rage Drive.
• During the Mishima Saga, Devil Kazuya is able to teleport in a manner similar to Jinpachi's Astral Projection move.
• Devil Kazuya appears a number of times in the story mode. Kazuya transforms into him to fight Akuma, partially transforms in order to shoot down a Zaibatsu satellite, and transforms into a more advanced form of his devil ("Devil Kazuya-X") for his final fight with Heihachi.
• In the Tekken 7 story, Devil Kazuya is revealed to the world for the first time in a global media broadcast set up by Heihachi.
• Devil Kazuya also appears in Shaheen's ending.

Other:

• While Devil itself does not actually appear in Street Fighter X Tekken, an energy-like manifestation of its wings can be seen during Kazuya's Devil Beam super art. Poison's and Ryu's Swap Costume designs are also both based on Devil.
• Kazuya has a different devil form appearance in Tekken The Pachislot 2nd and Tekken The Pachislot 3rd, resembling his classic look from Tekken Tag Tournament.
