I've not had luck in getting an answer by searching the Internet and this forum. I have installed an RX 570 as a placeholder in my new rig (Win10 2004) that I built for Flight Simulator 2020; it runs FS at about 17 FPS. I was lucky enough to be led to B&H where, for a few hours, they took pre-orders on Asus 3000 series video cards at MSRP, so I anticipate getting the 3080 relatively soon. Please suggest any
changes to this sequence, which, for now, omits use of Display Driver Utility.
- Download driver and utility, if any, for the nvidia card
- Disconnect LAN cable and put Windows Update on hold
- UNinstall the AMD GPU driver via Windows Control Panel/Programs
- Shut down and disconnect power cable
- Switch GPUs
- Boot computer
- Install previously downloaded RTX 3080 graphics driver and utility
- Shut down and reconnect Ethernet cable
- Boot and re-enable Windows Update

I use this sequence:
- go to Device Manager and switch GPU form NV or AMD driver to Microsoft basic one (VGA) and reboot;
- uninstall NV or AMD GPU software;
- switch off power and install new GPU;
- install new software.
why? @op, DDU is required for AMD > NV switches, but not for NV >
AMD switches.

Thanks! That's why I asked for suggestions. At what point in my straw-man sequence would you insert DDU? Would you run DDU instead of the Control-Panel uninstall or in addition to it?
After running the AMD uninstaller, its just to clean up the few things that their installer doesn't create uninstall data
for.

Right now, nether Nvidia nor Asus have a driver available for download. I'll presume that the latest Nvidia driver for the 2000 series is intended for the 3000 series unless they put up a new one on release day or before I receive my card.
a new driver will
be put up on the 17th, 456.16 or later.

DDU is needed only in emergency situations, when there are glitches and you want to be sure in clean installation of GPU drivers.

I sort of figured there might be a new one at the last minute because of the fact that Asus offers no driver or utility at all, not even one from nvidia. But that was very astute of you. You even know the version number that will be assigned. Have they announced that, or do you work at Nvidia?

We have a nvidia rep here, he mentioned it wee while ago. 17th new drivers.
its true that i usually berate people for using it for every driver
update, however the AMD uninstall is known to leave services and dlls registered to the system that cause issues with the nvidia driver, also if the amd user has done upgrade installs for the last few years there are some changes to certain file locations and names that will no longer get uninstalled. The Vulkan json for instance, which amd hasn't properly implemented graceful failure for the event of a device no longer being present (it should continue on to enumerating the next device,
instead of stops in its tracks.
there are also some other adrenaline dll's that can lead to crash at launch scenario's on web browsers, and encoding utilities.
ManuelG works at nvidia, the reviewer driver version is public knowledge, so far we've seen 455.77, 456.02 and 456.16 In the past its been unusual to receive the review driver, prerelease driver 411.51, and the launch day GRD was 411.63 with a 411.70 quickly following to correct a pascal performance issue in everything except
ubisoft titles (a bug in the software scheduling iirc)
