The flaw was first spotted by tech reviewer, Dave Lee, who posted a YouTube video showing how the trackpad on the XPS 15 wobbled from side to side.

Lee claimed he had noticed the problem on both the XPS 15 and 17, but that the problem was “definitely more pronounced and more annoying” on the XPS 15. He added that it wasn’t an “infrequent issue” according to other XPS laptop owners, either.

In a statement sent to WindowsCentral.com, Dell admits that recently shipped models of the XPS 15 do indeed have a quality control problem with the trackpad.

“Dell is aware that some XPS 15 9500 customers might be experiencing an issue with their touchpad,” the statement reads. “We have identified and resolved this issue on all systems shipping in June 2020 and beyond. While functionality is not affected, it does not meet the stringent quality and experience standards we set for ourselves. Any current XPS 15 9500 customers experiencing this issue can contact Dell customer support to have it remediated.”

As Dave Lee points out in his video, the wobbly trackpad can be fixed by applying electrical tape or by tightening screws inside the laptop, but customers who’ve paid $1,099 upwards for the laptop are unlikely to want to apply such DIY fixes - and doing so may well invalidate the laptop’s warranty.

The XPS range has been a long-standing hit for the PC maker. The slender Dell XPS 13 was announced at CES back in 2012 and became an instant hit with customers looking for a Windows-based alternative to the Apple MacBook Air. The same styling has since migrated upwards in size to models such as the XPS 15 and XPS 17.
