Terrific audio from a soundbar!

I bought the soundbar from Video & Audio Center via Amazon marketplace. I was a little skeptical since it had not yet officially been released; however, they are an authorized Samsung dealer, so I made the purchase and everything arrived promptly, unopened and successfully registered with Samsung recognizing the manufacturer 1-year warranty! My initial impressions are vague since we cannot yet play any Dolby Atmos movies - however I can report my Apple TV 4K plugged into the soundbar, then the arc ports of the soundbar and OLED65E6P TV connected does indeed pass Dolby Vision (however, there is a lag between the audio and video when watching as Dolby Vision). The soundbar has a Sync feature which allows you to delay audio which does help. I even bought the Belkin Ultra High Speed 48gbps HDMI cables; however, this has not helped. When using with a Logitech universal remote - it surprises me a $1700 sound bar does not accept a IR signal to take you directly to the appropriate input, instead you have a source button you have to toggle through the inputs... This leads to issues since the soundbar does auto detect and tries to place you on the input which can conflict if the remote also is changing inputs; however if the AppleTV is on and you are switching to (i.e. a PS3) I always land on the wrong input even with the remote set to not send a change in inputs... It's very frustrating! Especially when you have non-technical household members :).My favorite thing about this soundbar is the side-firing effect... that really stands out! I have the sides open and there are walls on either side. As for the overhead - both the forward and rear overhead are hardly noticeable in the simulated surround mode... The ceiling is 7 1/2 feet and the soundbar is 2 1/2 feet high and 9 feet away...Edit - 9/4, I finally had an opportunity to see the &

34;Dolby Atmos&

34; / &

34;DTS:X&

34; scroll on the soundbar's display by playing various trailers (like Dolby's Amaze) through my Microsoft Surface - really great quality! The rear speakers really standout during these soundtracks.I switched to &

34;Standard&

34; rather then the &

34;Surround&

34; mode for non-Dolby Atmos/non-DTS:X because in simulated surround the rear speakers seem to be more of a whisper... I would like to get rear speaker stands to bring them closer to ear level. After this and other tweaks (Side +3/Front Top +5/Rear Top +5 and Rear +4), I am much happier with the quality of the audio. Music sounds amazing, bass is really impressive and the vocal clarity is much better than my ancient Sony receiver with 7.1 Bose speakers I had in place before.Setup was easy; however, just power them on, for the first time, in the order the instructions say (Subwoofer, surround and then finally the soundbar.) All the pieces connected without any issues and the rear speakers have stayed connected. I wish some type of demo mode or sound setup was included to highlight the features.I added the skill to my Amazon Echo, but I haven't yet found it to be useful; however, it is a nice feature. SmartThings WiFi setup was a breeze, but the included options in the app are rather limited. But overall, I am indeed much happier then my initial review may have suggested.

I purchased the long awaited HW-N950 sound bar as soon as it was available and I have to say I am very happy with it. Setup was easy and I didn’t run into issues syncing the rear surround speakers to the soundbar. It is definitely addicting and I look forward to come home to watch movies/series for an immersive sound experience. Samsung has definitely step it up with Harman/Kardon now part of the family. Dialogue/speech are crystal clear even during scene with lots of dynamic such as explosions and/or loud background music. Movies like Jurassic World definitely make you feel like you're in a theater with the up firing channels and rear speakers as well as the sub-woofer shaking the couch. Even TV series on HBO gave me goose bumps and jump from unsuspecting ghost/demonic voices that came out of nowhere. The sounds are so realistic that my dogs keep barking each time a door bell ring in a movie/TV scene. They have never done that before with my previous sound bar. Last but not least, the sound bar is able to get loud even on low settings especially at night. I had to turn the volume down below 10 while watching Jurassic World to test it out. Overall, it is the best Atmos/DTS:X sound bar out there that you'll find. There is no competitor. I definitely recommend if you want to get a real home theater experience if you're looking for a simplistic look without the hassles of running speaker wires all over your house. It is definitely an elegant system that is powerful enough to rattle your windows but so clear that you're able to hear whispers in quiet scene.

This is a very high quality top notch surround system. It's great because it does Dolby Atmos. With my XBOX One and the Dolby access app, these speakers rattle my windows at volume 30 and it goes all the way to 100. This is a very expensive top notch surround system but I rate it 5 stars for Ease of Setup, Quality, and House Rocking bass. I mean you can get a super nice wired system with much more power for the same price but I personally would have needed professional setup for something like that with 10 speakers and wires everywhere. I set this up in 15 minutes and it's compact and neat which is a plus for me because I have a small living room in my house. Samsung delivers great stuff which is a bit expensive but the quality is well worth it in my opinion for their TVs, phones, and speaker systems.

I bought this to replace my Samanung K650 with R5 speakers connected to make it a surround-sound system. I always had an issue with my old sound bar that the sound would keep ether becoming un-audible or the TV would switch back to TV Speakers when setup as Surround-sound using the Samsung R5 rear speakers. Had it on 2 different Samsung TV's with the same issue.

Picked the Samsung HW-N950 with rear speakers as a complete set hoping I would have better luck with surround-sound.

Currently I have the Samsung 65 inch 8000 series TV that I am connecting the HW-950 using HDMI 4(ARC) connector to the soundbar.

Setup was a snap, once connected up to power the Sub-woofer and 2 Rear speakers auto connected to the sound bar. Couldn't have been any easier to get them to pair. In case you have an issue with the pairing the instructions give a manual pairing method as well. Now this is replacing an existing sound bar but after adding this one it came up automatically connected to the TV and Identified correctly. Not sure if it was because it was replacing one or if this would have happened anyways.

Sound was a little more challenging to get working correctly for the back speakers to work. When first connected the sub-woofer and rear speakers had either no sound or so low you couldn't hear them unless you had your ear next to them. Worked on trying to get this working correctly for a few days by doing lots of web searches on the issue and found many had this issue but none of the threads had a real resolution that I could use to fix the issue. I finally did some searches on the specific sound settings in the TV Sound Options. Once I got a good understanding on what each setting/option actually did four sound quality I found the correct settings to get it all working correctly. I didn't have much hope when changing the settings because I did try this in the past with my old soundbar and it didn't make a difference when using it. But they certainly worked on the HW-950.

On the Samsung 8000 Series TV Options I found the below worked on getting the rear and sub-woofer speakers working. In settings > Sound > Expert Settings. Set the HDMI input Audio Format to Bitstream (Not PCM). Also set the Digital Output Audio to Dolby Digital instead (Not PCM). I also had to change the Sub-woofer and Rear Speakers volume settings, they can go from -6 to +6. I had to change both to +6 to get the sound the way I liked it. Speaker volume settings might be different for you but this worked for me. Once the above changes were made the back speakers always had some sort of audible sound depending on what you are watching. When watching sports or programs with some background music You can hear the music or crowd behind you at a good sound level. When watching action movies that have sound coming from behind you to the front it was clear and crisp. Sub-woofer gave good lows but not enough to vibrate the floor. Maybe if I turn up the main volume on the sound bar it would but then the kids complain they can't hear there TV's. Listening to Music had the music from all speakers but voices only come from the front and not the rear speakers. This might just be the way the music is broadcast-ed. I also have a Roku that I decided to hook up even though the TV is a Smart TV and supported most of the Apps that I had on my Roku. I have found that the Plex app on the Roku has a little better sound than using the Plex app in the smart TV, but even the Plex app in the TV gave great sound. To get the best sound results even with a Blu-Ray player you should connect it up through the Soundbar and not directly through the TV. I tried it both ways and found the sound when connected through the soundbar much better quality. The instructions also state if you have a movie using Dolby Atmos the device needs to be connected through the HDMI ports on the soundbar to take advantage of it. The sound bar has a total of 3 HDMI ports, 1 to connect to the TV that supports ARC and 2 for optional devices. On a side note you can also configure the 8000 series TV remote to control devices connected into the HDMI ports on the Soundbar. This has them show up in the Smart Hub for selection just like any other App you might have installed.

Overall after getting it configured correctly I found it to be a great sound system with great sound quality. It might not be as good as a component surround-sound setup Like my old Yamaha system I had years ago but this takes up a bit less space and has a cleaner look. It also simplifies setup and usage. I would like a little more control for how loud you can set the Sub-Woofer and Rear speakers so I didn't have to set them to maximum volume. I didn't have any Dolby Atmos movies to try so I can't comment on that but 5.1 surround-sound works great.

Bought this product to replace a 15-year old Bose speaker system and Denon receiver. Decided it was time to simplify my audio setup. This soundbar does not disappoint - the sound is very crisp and clear. My wife feels that dialogue, in particular, is much clearer. The system is easy to set up - even the wireless speakers connected quickly. (The wireless speakers are one of this unit's big advantages.) Connections to both WiFi and Bluetooth were also easy to accomplish. Being able to stream music from our phones is a nice feature. I have a Samsung TV so this unit and remote connect seamlessly. Watching a Blu-ray movie with Dolby Atmos coding is an incredible experience. The sound can shake the room, if you're so inclined. There's no "room tuning" utility in the unit, but adjusting the various speakers is fairly easy to do. All in all, I don't miss having the separate receiver with its heat. The Samsung soundbar has proved to be a worthy substitute for much more complicated (and expensive) systems.

3.0 out of 5 stars A number of problems

Reviewed in Canada on December 3, 2018

I just migrated from a discrete 7.1 system (Speakercraft + Pioneer Elite) to the 7.1.4 Samsung because I downsized into a condo from my house. Here are my thoughts:

  1. The ATMOS sound is over-rated. Not like the theatres obviously, and the audio controls from the Samsung speakers is not flexible enough to create a fuller sound from all the bouncing around that the sound waves have to do. There's no way to calibrate the audio properly, and it's sad that Samsung and Harman Kardon (their subsidiary) couldn't include a calibration tool and room mic to help with that. It's not hard; my Pioneer came with one.
  1. The HDMI cable that comes with it isn't high enough bandwidth to handle wide color gamut at 4k plus ARC. I replaced it with a $6 certified cable from Monoprice and that solved a problem that wasted hours of my time.
  1. There are only two HDMI inputs. That covers my Apple TV and my Panasonic 820 Blu Ray player, but that's about it. So how do I get an Xbox into this thing? Sigh. Probably have to buy an HDMI switch of some sort and chain it.
  1. The manual is weak. No test disc to make sure each speaker is working properly.

If Samsung is going to tap the higher end sound bar market, there needs to be more work on the firmware, documentation, and packaging.
