Canon has had 15 years to get the 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM Mark II right, and produce a worthy successor to the venerable, but still very capable original. And it has. Show The new Mk II has less in the way of revolutionary new features, as the Mk I was pretty well specified anyway, and Canon has applied an evolutionary but thorough strategy of all-round enhancement. With the Mark II, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and Canon has put everything together into a superbly integrated and sweet-handling package (now sans the push-pull zoom). The Canon 100-400mm Mk II is sharper than the Mk I, particularly at low F-numbers where it's most beneficial, and towards the edges of the frame. Stopping down doesn't drastically improve sharpness, other than to increase depth of field. Image stabilization is much improved, now state of the art, build quality includes a full set of weather-resistant seals, and there's a standard of mechanical durability not seen before in this type of lens. AF is fast, positive, and consistently accurate (some may find the need to microadjust, though, depending on their particular lens / body copy), and the minimum focusing distance has been dramatically reduced, increasing versatility by a surprising amount, we found. It should be clear by now that we rather liked the Canon 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM Mark II and it's hard to see how, realistically, it might be further improved in any meaningful way - at least not without a big increase in size, weight, and cost. As it stands, Canon has struck a very good balance of performance vs. features vs. price, in a supremely usable package.
