Để kể lại một câu chuyện, một trải nghiệm quá khứ đáng nhớ, bạn sẽ cần vận dụng kiến thức ngữ pháp liên quan tới thì quá khứ (đơn, tiếp diễn), các từ nối, từ chỉ trình tự thời gian...

1. Kể chuyện trong một cuộc hội thoại

Nếu bạn định kể câu chuyện của bạn sau khi bạn nghe người khác nói, bạn có thể nói như này:

• That reminds me! (Điều đó làm tôi nhớ đến)
• Funny you should say that. Did I ever tell you about… (Thật là buồn cười phải không bạn! Tôi đã bao giờ kể cho bạn về…)
• Hearing your story reminds me of when… (Nghe câu chuyện của bạn gợi cho tôi nhớ đến khi …)
• Something similar happened to me…. (cũng có chuyện tương tự xảy ra với tôi)

2. Để bắt đầu câu chuyện

Bạn có thể sử dụng các cụm từ dưới đây. Khi viết, hãy dùng dấu phảy để ngăn cách chúng với phần nội dung còn lại. First of all, To start off with, Initially, To begin with,

Ví dụ:

• To begin with, I began my education in London.
• First of all, I opened the cupboard.
• To start off with, we decided our destination was New York.
• Initially, I thought it was a bad idea.

2. Diễn biến câu chuyện

Bạn có thể tiếp tục kể chuyện bằng cách sử dụng các cụm từ dưới đây hoặc một mệnh đề thời gian bắt đầu bằng "as soon as" or "after". Khi sử dụng mệnh đề thời gian, chia động từ ở thời quá khứ đơn sau cụm từ chỉ thời gian.

• Then,
• After that,
• Next,
• As soon as / When + full clause,
• ...but then
• Immediately,

Ví dụ:

• Then, I started to get worried.
• After that, we knew that there would be no problem!
• Next, we decided on our strategy.
• As soon as we arrived, we unpacked our bags.
• We were sure everything was ready, but then we discovered some unexpected problems.
• Immediately, I telephoned my friend Tom.

3. Giới thiệu bước ngoặt, tình tiết bất ngờ mới trong câu chuyện

"Suddenly," và "Unexpectedly," sẽ là 2 từ giúp bạn thực hiện nhiệm vụ này khi kể chuyện.

Ví dụ:

• Suddenly, a child burst into the room with a note for Ms. Smith.
• Unexpectedly, the people in the room didn't agree with the mayor.

4. Kết thúc câu chuyện

Để kể phần kết câu chuyện, bạn có thể sử dụng các từ/cụm từ sau: Finally, In the end,

• Eventually,

Ví dụ:

• Finally, I flew to London for my meeting with Jack.
• In the end, he decided to postpone the project.
• Eventually, we became tired and returned home.

5. Lưu ý các từ nối để câu chuyện liền mạch, dễ theo dõi

Từ nối có thể được dùng để diễn đạt lý do, kết quả, thông tin trái ngược, thêm thông tin và kết luận.

Ví dụ:

• I booked a flight because….
• As a result, I was late…
• Although I had a reservation, I hadn’t checked the airport name.
• I made sure I had an up-to-date passport and I also took along my driving licence.
• In short, I had made a complete mess of the holiday.

6. Lưu ý về thì khi kể chuyện

Ta thường dùng thì quá khứ để kể câu chuyện xảy ra trong quá khứ. Nếu bạn kể câu chuyện theo thứ tự sự kiện, bạn có thể sử dụng thì quá khứ đơn:

Ví dụ:

• I double checked my reservation. I packed my suitcase, and then I called a taxi.

  Sử dụng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn để mô tả những hành động đang xảy ra trong thời gian của câu chuyện của bạn, hoặc để mô tả hậu cảnh.

Ví dụ:

• The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. We were driving along the motorway quite steadily until we suddenly saw in front of us the warning lights to slow down. We were heading towards a huge tailback.

  Đôi khi bạn muốn tránh kể câu chuyện của bạn theo thứ tự sự kiện. Bạn có thể sử dụng thì quá khứ hoàn thành (đơn hay tiếp diễn) để làm cho câu chuyện của bạn thú vị hơn bằng cách kể những sự kiện xảy ra trước những sự kiện trong câu chuyện của bạn.

Ví dụ:

• I double checked my reservation, which I had made three days previously.
• I wanted to visit some friends who had been living in France for the last five years.

7. Từ vựng

Cố gắng sử dụng những từ khác nhau để diễn đạt câu chuyện của bạn hay hơn. Nhớ là bạn phải “phóng đại lên” khi kể một câu chuyện, do vậy thay vì sử dụng những từ như “nice” hay “bad”, thì hãy dùng những từ hay hơn như: “beautiful”, “fabulous”, “wonderful”, “horrible”, “awful” hay “terrible”.

8. Đoạn văn minh hoạ

Ví dụ 1:

Last week, I visited Chicago to attend a business conference. While I was there, I decided to visit the Art Institute of Chicago. To start off, my flight was delayed. Next, the airline lost my luggage, so I had to wait for two hours at the airport while they tracked it down. Unexpectedly, the luggage had been set aside and forgotten.

As soon as they found my luggage, I found a taxi and rode into town. During the ride into town, the driver told me about his last visit to the Art Institute. After I had arrived safely, everything began to go smoothly. The business conference was very interesting, and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the institute. Finally, I caught my flight back to Seattle.

Luckily, everything went smoothly. I arrived home just in time to kiss my daughter good night.

Ví dụ 2:

4 years ago, I had an unforgettable experience. It was a Friday afternoon, and I was helping my mother doing some house chores.

When I was hanging clothes on the balcony, some of them were blown to the roof of my house. So I decided to use a long pipe to take them back. It went well with the clothes near my place, but I couldn’t reach the others. They were too far! I kept trying and trying, but it didn’t work. And suddenly, I slipped and fell down to the terrace. I felt weak and hurt all over my body. I couldn’t even breathe. I remember there were a lot of dust on my body, and there were broken woods and plywoods everywhere. Right away, my family ran to me. They helped me to get up, they were totally shocked.

My parents quickly took me to the hospital. Fortunately, I wasn’t on seriously injured. There were some wounds on my head, arms and legs. After that accident, I try to be more careful when doing anything, and always feel for the actors in action movies. To me, nothing is more precious than life.
