Project x hzrdus smoke green review

Touting the Project X HZRDUS Smoke Green as the stiffest shaft in its arsenal, it certainly stands up to that billing! We tested all of the models statically and had some of our strongest players test the 60 and 70 gram models.

Models Available

The HZRDUS Smole Green comes in two weight classes, 60 and 70. The 60 is available in 6.0, 6.5 and 6.5TX flexes. But be careful, the flexes are actually playing a full flex stiffer, i.e. 6.0 plays to 7.0, etc. The 6.5TX will play like a X flex tipped an inch. The 70 comes in similar flexes, 6.0, 6.5 and 6.5TX. The 70 gram shafts play stiff to designated flex as well. The cool thing about these shafts is that the weights are actually pretty light, 62-68 grams in the 60 and 72-78 grams in the 70. This is likely due to the use of the Hexcel Hex Tow HM63 fiber which is extremely strong for its weight.

Shaft Profile

Both of these shaft models are low launch and low spin. They have the stiffest tip profile of all of the HZRDUS and Even Flow shafts. The closest competitors in our database are the Mitsubishi Chemical Golf TENSEI CK PRO Orange and the VEYLIX Rome 688 Black.

These shafts are only slightly counterbalanced which means they will yield slightly higher swing weights in today's modern drivers.

The mid-section of these shafts play very stiff which is great for stronger players with faster transitions. Perfect "gamer" driver shaft for a couple of my Long Drive guys!

Color Options

The HZRDUS Smoke Green shaft is available in traditional grey finish or the Gamma PVD finish shown in the pictures here. Pretty awesome if you ask me!

These shafts are designed and will hold up to some of the strongest swings. I would choose a softer tip shaft for fairway woods, unless you are planning on using the fairway wood mostly off the tee.

Project X’s HZRDUS family typically best fits players with aggressive tempos seeking low torque and minimal spin. While there are different combinations to fit a range of players, the Project X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Green is the lowest spin and launch option of the RDX family and features a counterbalanced profile. Like the rest of the RDX lineup, Project X partnered up with Hexcel to use their aerospace-grade HexTow carbon fiber to deliver a more refined feel with and more optimal performance. And for you Project X HZRDUS T1100 faithful, the HZRDUS Smoke RDX Green is the next evolution of that fan favorite.

The Looks

The Project X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Green stands out in the lineup due to its bold metallic green upper half that transitions into a glossy black lower half. You might remember the original HZRDUS Smoke Green shaft which was affectionately nicknamed “the Hulk”. While the new Smoke RDX Green certainly has similarities to that shaft, something about it gives me a more reptilian vibe. You might ask “why?” or “how?”, but it vividly reminds me of one of the greatest video game characters of all time:

The classic HZRDUS branding is still present outlined in white over the metallic green base. You can’t go wrong with the “biohazard” logo displaying the specs of the shaft. Then there’s the Smoke RDX logo right where the shaft transitions to the black finish.

How Does it Feel?

One of the benefits of Project X’s use of Hexcel’s HexTow carbon fiber is that they are able to better manage the weight and strength of the shaft. Historically, low launch/spin shafts like the Smoke RDX Green would have thicker walls with super stout feels. One might say the feeling could be “boardy” or “dead”. By using more advanced fibers, Project X is able to better control the weight, balance, and rigidity of the shaft in all the right places. As such, the Smoke RDX Green is very solid and stable, but the response is much more precise. (Assuming you have the swing for it, of course.) The Green’s counterbalance design makes the driver feel much more “swingable”, and less of a fight to maximize your performance.

There’s a certain fluidity in the Smoke RDX Green that I didn’t get out of the Black or Blue. I felt like the bend profile seemed a little smoother/more gradual as opposed to a hard and distinct kick point. In reality, I thought it felt somewhere right between gradual and a single kick point. In my opinion, that was a very signature characteristic I picked up from the original HZRDUS T1100 as well. Generally speaking, I feel like the Green has a sweeter and smoother feel than the rest of the Smoke RDX family while still playing low/low as advertised.

The Project X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Green was definitely a low launching and spinning shaft for me. Based on my swing at the time of reviewing this shaft, I definitely hit a low piercing shot that navigated the wind well and saw nice run out. More importantly, I saw strong control with a tight dispersion. I chalk this up to the improved feel and stability provided by the HexTow fiber discussed above. The shaft seemed easier to control and I was able to hit piercing ropes fairly easily. Don’t get me wrong, the Smoke RDX Green is a stout shaft that you have to have the swing for, but if you do, it certainly does what it says it’s supposed to do.

Final Thoughts – Project X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Green Shaft

I’m pretty confident in saying the Smoke RDX Green is one of the better HZRDUS shafts Project X has produced to date. Don’t get me wrong, I’m well aware that there’s a big piece of subjectivity to that statement, but I’m still comfortable with my opinion. The Hexcel HexTow carbon fiber makes a huge difference in delivering that signature HZRDUS stability, but with a much more responsive and pleasant feel. If you’re looking for a nice blend of stout and smooth with a low piercing flight, the Project X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Green shaft certainly fits that bill.

What is iM10?

What does small batch mean in golf shafts?

DB: Small Batch is the next evolution of our premium products. Shafts are normal process through grinding for final CPM in large batches. With Small Batch each shaft is individually processed through grinding to ensure a tighter frequency tolerance and less shaft to shaft variation.
