Cost of 2023 Honda Civic

Oct 28, 2022 at 10:12am ET

Honda first revealed the new Civic Type R in July, but it didn’t dish out all the details. More information would come a month later when the automaker announced its horsepower and torque numbers, but pricing remained a mystery until now. The 2023 Civic Type R will start at $43,990 (the price includes the $1,095 destination charge), and the car begins arriving at dealers today.

Customers will get Honda’s most powerful model ever sold in America for that price. The car’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine produces 315 horsepower (235 kilowatts) and 310 pound-feet (420 Newton-meters) of torque. That’s an increase of 9 and 15, respectively, over the outgoing model. A six-speed manual transmission is the only available gearbox.

The new Civic Type R is slightly larger than the model it replaces, growing in length and width. Honda also retuned the car’s suspension to make it more streetable, though it will still perform on the track. The new Type R now holds the production front-wheel-drive record at Suzuka, besting the previous-generation car by 0.8 seconds.

The Type R receives a unique visual identity, wearing a more aggressive front-end design with revised corner intakes and a mesh grille. Subtle fender flares and sills dress up the side, while the rear diffuser houses the triple exhaust tips. It’s a noticeable upgrade in style over the standard model. Inside, Honda only offers the Civic Type R with a black interior and red contrast stitching. However, the automaker also installed a new R+ drive mode and an enhanced LogR datalogger that measures real-time performance metrics.

The car is available in five colors, with Sonic Gray Pearl, Championship White, and Boost Blue Pearl requiring an extra $395. The two free colors are Crystal Black Pearl and Rallye Red. Other upgrades include 19-inch forged alloy wheels at $3,100, a carbon-fiber wing for $2,250, and a $400 Alcantara steering wheel. Matte-black 19-inch wheels are standard.

Mamadou Diallo, vice president of sales at American Honda, said that the Type R is “the perfect capstone” to the 11th-generation Civic lineup. The previous Type R had a starting price at just under $39,000, with the 2023 model costing about $5,000 more than before.

Honda revealed pricing for the 2023 Civic Type R on Thursday, confirming the highly anticipated hot hatch will start at $43,990, including destination.

You get a lot for your money. Under the hood sits a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four making 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It's paired to one of the best-feeling six-speed manual shifters on the market, sending power to the front wheels through a limited-slip differential. There are also upgrades to the braking, chassis, suspension, tires, and interior.

The biggest news here is, of course, the gigantic price increase over the old Type R. The 2021 model started at $38,450. Only the yellow-painted Limited Edition model out-prices the new car, with its original MSRP of $44,950.

Interestingly, the new Type R is priced at almost exactly the same MSRP as the Toyota GR Corolla Circuit edition, which sells for $43,995. Of course, if you don't want the bigger brakes, limited-slip differentials, and big wing, you can get a Corolla for much cheaper; the base Core model starts at just $36,995.

Will the hiked-up price stop you from buying a Civic Type R? Do you think Honda is simply trying to cash in on frequent dealer markups? Let us know in the comments below.

Now entering its 11th generation in 2022, Honda has done a great job of keeping the Civic a fresh and exciting option for buyers. Little has changed with the 2023 Honda Civic as it just underwent a redesign for the 2022 model year. The biggest news being the change in trims, as the LX trim has been dropped with the Sport trim replacing it as the new entry-level model, followed by the EX, Touring, and the highly anticipated return of the Type R. Buyers will still have their choice of body styles with the sedan and hatchbacks both being available for the upcoming model year.

It remains the go-to compact for drivers looking for Honda’s legendary reliability, fuel efficiency, and overall usability. Honda has done a great job of giving buyers an attractive list of standard options across the model lineup in an effort to remain competitive in the class.

Handling remains above average thanks to the current generation's improved chassis. Honda says it's more than 10 percent stiffer than the last generation. This allowed engineers to tune the suspension to take full advantage of the newfound rigidity allowing for better handling, improved ride quality, and less road noise and overall harshness. If you're looking for more handling and performance, Honda will continue to offer the Civic Si and Type R models respectively.

The current look should still feel fresh as it was just unveiled for the 2022 model year. At first glance, car shoppers will think they’re looking at the Civic’s larger sibling, the Accord. Honda moved the A-pillars back while making the hood longer allowing for a larger windshield and improved visibility. Other design cues brought over from Accord are the upright front grille along with front and rear LED lighting.

Buyers won't have to spring for a higher trim to get an attractive look. Aggressive styling comes standard as the popular compact features beefy muscular lines once reserved for its corporate cousin over at Acura. What was once considered an entry-level vehicle all grown up?

Interior Quality and Technology

Honda Civic DashboardHonda

The Civic’s interior can best be described as inviting. In a world where automakers are seemingly trying to overwhelm drivers with buttons and switches, the interior is welcoming keeping distractions to a minimum, while highlighting functionality with the well-thought-out placement of things drivers will use the most. At the heart of the interior is an infotainment display sitting atop the dash, putting things within comfortable reach of the driver and keeping them pointed toward the road.

A long mesh strip extending the length of the dash feels like a homage to vehicles of old while tastefully integrating A/C vents and adjustments. A wide center console offers plenty of storage along with a deep bin just below the USB and 12-volt outlets.

Seating remains adequate for up to four adults, but things may get tight if you decide to take a long road trip. As usual, Honda doesn’t provide very many options for interior colors or seating surfaces with black being the only color option and leather only being offered in the Touring model.

There’s no shortage of technology inside. As standard, you get a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display with an optional 9.0-inch unit available along with a 10.2-inch digital gauge display. Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto are both standard with wireless pairing available for buyers who opt for the larger screens. Other options available are in-dash navigation, premium Bose audio, and the increasingly convenient wireless smartphone charging pad.

The Civic has managed to remain at the top of the increasingly competitive compact car segment. Familiar models such as the Toyota Corolla, the Mazda 3, and Nissan Sentra continue to put out impressive offerings year after year. Models like the Volkswagen Jetta and Hyundai Elantra are offering even more options for buyers in the class. And with the rise in popularity among EVs, the face of this segment is rapidly changing, and expect it to become increasingly crowded in the coming years.
