1310 Accesses AbstractAntimicrobials are drugs used to treat infectious diseases. Principles of antimicrobial therapy are similar to cancer therapy. Together, treatment of infection and cancer is known as chemotherapy. Infectious diseases are curable contrary to cancer therapy. Antimicrobial therapy can be definitive, empirical, or prophylactic. Initially, single drug is sufficient to produce clinical cure, however, due to emergence of resistance even combination therapies are unreliable in curing the infection in current time. Main focus of antimicrobial therapy is selective targeted therapy in order to avoid toxicity to the host and to avoid emergence of resistance. This is achieved by understanding the PK/PD parameters of antimicrobials such as bactericidal and static nature, spectrum of activity, host factors, and biology of the organism. Choosing appropriate antibiotic according to the type of therapy and organism for adequate duration is important in combating resistance. Understanding the types and factors for resistance will help in developing strategies for prevention and treatment of resistant microbes. Keywords

What are the factors to be considered in choosing an antimicrobial agent?Host Factors to Be Considered in Selection of Antimicrobial Agents. Renal and Hepatic Function. ... . Age. ... . Genetic Variation. ... . Pregnancy and Lactation. ... . History of Allergy or Intolerance. ... . History of Recent Antimicrobial Use.. What are the three 3 guiding principles for prescribing antibiotics?3 Guiding Principles for Prescribing Antibiotics. Determine the likelihood of a bacterial infection. Signs and symptoms of bacterial URIs can be similar to those of viral infections. ... . Weight the benefits against the harms of antibiotics. ... . Implement judicious prescribing strategies.. What are the 3 different categories of antimicrobial agents? There are three types of public health antimicrobials: sterilizers, disinfectants, and sanitizers.
What factors must be considered when prescribing an antibiotic to a patient?Various factors go into clinical decision making when a physician prescribes a medication. These decisions include determining susceptibility, dosing regimens, and considering external factors such as age-related effects and routes of administration.
