Due to the coronavirus outbreak, lately, like many people, I am forced to stay at home. In light of that, I started searching for recommendations for thrillers, and discovered this 2017 Korean movie. My mother is a big fan of thriller movies, and she watched another thriller (which she deemed is bad) before watching this movie, so we both, especially she, think that this movie is mind-blowing. Just as the Chinese saying 沒有比較,沒有傷害 (without comparison, there is no hurt) goes

Poster for Forgotten, or Recalling the night, if with literal translation

There will be spoilers below, so if you don’t like it, watch the movie before reading this review!

Firstly, lets look at the official description of the movie:

Jin-Seok (Kang Ha-Neul) moves into a new home with his older brother Yoo-Seok (Kim Moo-Yul), mother (Na Young-Hee) and father (Moon Sung-Geun). Jin-Seok suffers from hypersensitivity, but with medication he is able to live normally. One rainy evening, Jin-Seok sees his older brother being thrown into a van by a group of men. After 19 days of silence, Yoo-Seok returns home, but he doesn’t remember anything from his disappearance. Jin-Seok though notices enough changes in his older brother’s personality and behavior that he begins to suspect that the person who has returned is not Yoo-Seok. Meanwhile, Jin-Seok keeps hearing sounds from a locked room temporarily storing the previous home owner’s belongings.

If you have watched the movie, I think you will agree that this movie belongs to the category of “tragic thriller”.

Then, if I am counting from the time I started keeping track of the movies I have watched, this is the third movie that gives me feels whenever I hear songs from it (the first being Coco, second being Call my by your name). At first, I didn’t realize how hard the movie will hit me. Thrillers should be gripping and occasional so powerful that it is unforgettable. The story can include poignant elements, but that’s it.

Nonetheless, this movie ultimately tipped me over.

At first look, the movie is a story about a brother seeking truth, wanting to know what has happened to his older brother. Who knows that it is all a fraud? Jin-Seok’s family is fake, and his brain has deceived himself by erasing part of his memories. Then, we learned about the truth, which is a complete tragedy, a tragedy that intertwined two families, instilling pain in Jin-Seok and Seong-Uk (the fake Yoo-Seok).

The way this film is shot is very much like a horror movie at first, with the shots of doorknobs, dream sequences, and so on. That successful drew a scream from me, and my mom was startled by my scream :p Those elements are gripping, so I didn’t disrespectfully watch the film, which I consider as watching while playing with my phone or thinking that everything is so evident in my head. Instead, I guessed and guessed, but in the end, the movie still surprised me.

I also love how the story is told. The first part raised a lot of question marks in my head, and everything is fishy, no one can be trusted. Then, as Jin-Seok runs back to the house, answers begin to unveil. I don’t mind getting a big reveal from someone as long as it is natural and doesn’t feel forced, as if the director wanted the movie to end, so a character is forced to give a speech of the truth. In the film, it is done very naturally, and at first, I thought it was Jin-Seok’s dream again when he saw that scene in the locked room. Uncanniness transcended into empathy and a deep sense of grief. After the darkness, warmth takes over, but the coldness looms. It really drew the “ahhh” of realization out of me.

The mood and colour of the film are mostly cold, even in the supposedly warm wooden house, there seems to be a cold hint of uncanniness in that place (it is brought out after Jin-Seok becomes suspicious, in my opinion). The cool tone is heightened when there’s rain, hinting that the truth is going to strike. In most scenes, in reality, they are very cold as well. The only warm scene lies in the time when Jin-Seok felt happy and content, the time before the accident. That’s why when the film starts, and when he thought that his family is real, it is in a warm tone. Interestingly, when the movie ends, Seong-Uk dies in a pool of blood, which is in cold tone (purple), although surrounded by the warm and soft outdoors, while Jin-Seok dies in a cold hospital ward. Is it implying that Seong-Uk’s death is a death of relief (warm tone of the surrounding) and pain (cold tone of the blood), while Jin-Seok is consumed by regret and pain (cold tone)?

The actors are outstanding and believable, deceiving me along with Jin-Seok. Especially Seong-Uk, he really seems like a different person.

Finally, moving onto the music, the two pieces of music that struck me are Old Love by Lee Moon-Sae and the end credit song. The end credit song is acting in a way like Vision of Gideon in Call me by your name. It is an extension of the movie, allowing the viewers to think and replay the truth in their heads, unable to leave the chair and move on with their life quickly. It is a piece of music that solicits emotions from viewers and perhaps tears too. I watched the second part of the movie again a few days later, and then Old Love came across. Abruptly, it overwhelmed me. The music itself has a lyrical and nostalgic melody, and when it is played, I can already foresee what will happen. Everything ended and turned into a memory in a second. Everything is being locked away in the back of Jin-Seok’s head. Combined with the music, I think this film dazzled me.

My favourite character is perhaps Seong- Uk.

Is it better to know a painful truth, even when it may kill you, or live not knowing it? I think that a lot of people will choose the former choice, but think about it — you will really die or decide to end your own life after knowing it. Then shouldn’t you choose the latter option?

In the film, Seong-Uk chooses the former, while Jin-Seok involuntarily selects the latter. Seong-Uk’s choice leads to greater (or maybe not) tragedy in the end because he keeps the pain alive.

I think that from the moment Jin-Seok repressed his memory, he is doomed. With his family gone, his hands stained with blood, his life has ended. As much as his brain tries to help him cope, it is like a part of him is missing. After knowing the truth, Jin-Seok is overwhelmed by it and decided to go through with it and kill himself.

As for Seong-Uk, he shares the same wretched fate as Jin-Seok, but he is in more turmoil, as he remembers everything. If Jin-Seok can continue to live because he forgets, then Seong-Uk can continue to live because he remembers.

The question I asked is a trick question. The main point is not on truth but vengeance. A lot of people seek for the truth because they went to avenge for themselves or their loved ones. Their own lives no longer matter because they have given their lives to hatred.

And if vengeance can no longer be taken because the culprit is dead, or that it is someone whom you cannot accept, where does it lead us?
