Since its introduction, the Canon EOS-M series been let down by its limited selection of native lenses. While the selection covers the most common focal lengths, there has been a real shortage of fast glass for the EF-M mount. The recent launch of the EF-M 32mm f1.4 may see the end of the drought but, given that it was launched on the same day as the flagship EOS-R full-frame mirrorless, it’s pretty clear where Canon’s focus is likely to be in the coming years.

One solution to this shortage has been to buy the Canon EF to EF-M adapter (or one of its cheaper clones). This is a good option, but you’re still going to be hit by the APC-C crop factor, so, for example, if you put a Canon EF 50mm f1.8 on an M series camera with the adapter, you’re really getting the equivalent of an 80mm f2.8 lens. Great if you want a portrait lens but, if you really want the 50mm focal length with f1.8 aperture, you’re going to need an EF 35mm f1.4. Not a cheap option.

This is where the Viltrox EF-EOS M2 adapter comes in. Rumoured since the late spring and confirmed a month or so ago, the Viltrox EF-EOS M2 is what’s called a speed-booster. Rather than just being a mount to mount adapter, it contains a lens element as well, that essentially squeezes the light coming out of the lens so that it covers a smaller area. In this case, the magnification factor is 0.71x. Applying this to Canon’s APC-C crop factor of 1.6x, we get a factor of 1.1x, much closer to the original focal length of the lens.

I’ve had my EF-EOS M2 for a few days now so here are my first impressions.

The outer packaging exudes quality.

The EF-EOS M2 comes in a robust cardboard outer box more reminiscent of an Apple product than say the typical packaging used for lenses.

Adapter in its storage container.

Inside the outer box is a strong protective plastic container. This container is fine for storage, but I’d prefer a soft drawstring bag instead as this is more than likely going to live in my camera bag, not on a shelf.

Inside the box, we have the adapter itself, a hex key for removing the two screws that secure the tripod mount and a small screwdriver. I’m not sure what this is needed for.

The adapter feels robust and well built. It fits snugly into the camera body and EF lenses fit into the front mount securely with no play in either mount. Overall, it is a solid, well-built product.

I haven’t had much chance to shoot yet. My first impressions are that auto-focus is slightly slower and maybe not as reliable as native lenses. However, as I’m new to the 50mm f1.8, it’s possible that it’s the lens and not the adapter that’s at fault.

The results, so far just from a short walk the other day seem sharp and bokeh looks smooth.

While the hardware is well designed and built, it’s clear that this is still a version 1.0 product when it comes to the firmware. When shooting, aperture values are shown on the camera after the 0.71 magnification factor has been applied so when my 50mm is wide open, the camera shows it as being at f1.2. I think I’d prefer it to report the actual lens data, not the adapted value.

This also passes through to the EXIF data where the 50mm f1.8 is completely misrepresented as a 35mm f1.2. Another EF lens is reported correctly by the adapter so this is probably just a firmware glitch. There is a micro-USB socket in the adapter so it looks like firmware updates are an option.
