I've had the Tamron 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Di III VC lens for awhile now (purchased it used from KEH) and have had a couple outings with it using my EOS M camera. I received the silver version with a newer serial number (thus having the later firmware).

My initial impressions out of the box were the lens had a good size to it but was not overly large. Build quality is very good, the lens feels solid. It did come with a petal hood which is decent sized.

Going in, I knew there was going to be compromises in the image but I just wasn't sure how much compromise there was going to be. Below are several full-sized, untouched samples from the last outing I took.

First, below are a couple comparison shots between the Tamron 18-200mm lens and Canon 18-55mm lens at 18mm.

Now a few more various samples from the Tamron lens.

My findings

Sharpness -

In general the lens had good center sharpness through the entire zoom range. It was the corners and extreme corners where the sharpness decreases even when stopped down. When zoomed in to longer focal lengths it was much of the same story. The foreground/background have kind of a soft glow to them and it's difficult to get sharp results. However, even at 200mm wide open, the sharpness was quite good. In general when shooting at that much of a focal length, it's extremely hard to get the entire frame sharp.

Chromatic Aberrations -

As with most super zooms, CAs are going to be an issue and this lens is no exception. This lens shows CAs in almost all situations that I encountered with some being very extreme (think in the corners of the frame and leaves against sky). Luckily, there is a good profile in Lightroom that does a very good job of handling CAs.

Vignetting -

Was not as bad as I thought it might be. I would almost call it comparable to the 55-250mm STM lens. When stopped down, it was not obvious enough to correct it.

Focus speed -

I found the focus speed to be on par with the other EF-M lenses. It definitely was not any slower than any other lenses I have tried. It did especially well at 200mm in my tests.

A few other comments

- The lens does zoom in reverse from a normal Canon lens. This may take some getting used to as I found myself continually trying to rotate it left to zoom.

- The weight is fairly substantial. In my last outing I did not have a neck strap so I was holding the camera/lens the entire time and my wrist did feel some fatigue.

- The manual focus zoom ring is super smooth and easy to rotate. I was worried I would accidentally move it but I don't believe the lens has full-time focus. It was noted in another review the manual focus is not a mechanical focus rather a focus-by-wire focus. I didn't try it out since I seldom use manual focus.

- Even though there is a zoom lock, I felt the zoom was stiff enough that there wouldn't be any zoom creep. Still, it's nice to have the zoom lock for added security.

Parting thoughts

Like many super zoom lenses, you get a very useful range with some compromises in image quality. While I found the focal range extremely useful, I can't get past the lower image quality when compared to the already average 18-55mm kit lens. If you value range over image quality then I'd say this lens is a good bargain if you can find it used. However, I believe the $500 price tag for a new copy is too much to pay.
